isn't haiku supposed to be

5 /7 /5?

thank you for commenting. early on english haiku poets tried to remain faithful to japanese haiku syllable count. this turns out to be a mistake. japanese haiku uses sound units, not quite english syllables. when you try to fit english haiku into 5/7/5, you end up with superficially padded, forced haiku. later english haiku poets have for the most part abandoned this. i try to keep my haiku around 11-13 syllables, and try to make it sound right. I hope i succeed once in a while.
